MY FUTURE LEARNING SPACE

You will design a future learning space that is based both in a refugee camp and on a contemporary educational concern that you identify having read the nine Teachers Without Borders initiatives. Underpinning your design will be two or more of the six learning spaces. The design is to be housed in your PLN.

My initial thoughts after reading this brief for Assignment 3 were, are you kidding! There is absolutely no way that I can come up with a future learning space for refugees. While I was deep in my liminal space, I started my research.

I have spent many hours reading and viewing, listening and watching. The facts surrounding the Syrian Crisis are unbelievable. The numbers are staggering.

For me, the images are really powerful. No words are required. You can almost feel the despair, the loss, the exhaustion, the desperation and also the hope.

It is impossible not to be effected by the statistics, the stories and the images of the Syrian refugees. The plight of the Syrian refugees has become so much more than a mere assignment. The overwhelming feeling of wanting to do something practical to help these people who have lost everything.

I have read countless stories of young Syrian girls who are no longer attending school. Some because it is not safe to walk to the schools within the Zaatari Camp, others because it is too far to walk to school, girls who are required to stay at home and look after their younger siblings, those who are sent to find work and young girls who are forced to marry young often because their parents feel there are no other options for their daughter's future.

I am endeavouring to create a learning space that incorporates the Teachers Without Borders initiative of Girls' Education. My learning space will focus on providing a safe environment for school age female refugees in the Zaatari Camp who are no longer attending school. The learning space will be like a club, a safe haven where girls can learn practical skills needed to find employment, continue their education, enjoy the company of other girls, play team sports, explore their creativity and grow. A combination of the personal, group and eSpace will be integrated into Girls' Education Matters (GEM). All girls will be welcome to attend whenever they can. It is hoped that GEM can encourage girls of the Zaatari Camp not to be pressured into marriage at a young age, that there are other options that can be explored.
