WHAT IS THE LIMINAL SPACE?

The liminal learning space is the place of transition. The word liminal come from the Latin root that means threshold. Literally a threshold can be liked to a doorway or a bridge. A threshold can also be described as the start of a journey.
The liminal learning space is not a physical space. It is a space that can be uncomfortable, being outside your comfort zone. It is the space that is in between learning moments. It is the space in which we experience difficulty, where we need to let go of how we see certain things and embrace the new.
We all have spent time in the liminal space. As I progress through my 4th year upgrade, there have been many moments (days) where I have inhabited the liminal space. Waiting for the 'penny to drop', persevering and believing that I will understand tasks and complete assignments. Seeking out help from our eCop and trying new things. Feeling anxious and overwhelmed and then that wonderful feeling of accomplishment when you reach the other side.
As teachers, we need to support students when they are in the liminal space. Recognising that some students take longer to 'get it'. That it is OK to spend time searching for deeper meaning and processing knowledge. The liminal space is not easy but so worth it when you stick with it and get to the other side.
